Settled already by Roman times, the island’s strategic position opposite the Lido port proved useful during the Middle Ages. There are military constructions here too, such as the circular-shaped Maximilian Tower (1813) named after the Emperor of Austria who took refuge here during the uprisings. The Island was and still is a large market garden area supplying the Venetian markets.
