Forte Carpenedo

forti e fortificazioni

Facebook

It represents, together with the twins fortresses Gazzera and Tron, the core origination of the "Campo Trincerato" of Mestre. The "Campo Trincerato" of Mestre began construction at the end of the 19th century to support the Forte Marghera, which was not big enough to defend Venice and it's arsenale from attacks of the mainland, due to the increase in long range cannons. The fort had about twenty cannons of medium calibur positioned on 12 outdoor emplacements, situated for mortar fire. Musketry and machine guns were posted around all of the perimeter and in 4 "Caponiere", which were in an artificial moat that encircled the fortress garanteeing the protection of every side.
Today the fort can be visited through the museum, where the military ambience of the last century has been recreated, (the room of the officer, the office of the commander, the infermary, the canteen, the rooms and the stables), however the external part is the seat of a centre for Environmental studies.
