Fondazione Giorgio Cini

The Giorgio Cini Foundation was constituted on 20 April 1951 by Count Vittorio Cini, in memory of his son Giorgio. Its founding mission was twofold: to restore the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, salvaging it from almost 150 years of neglect under military occupation, and to create an international cultural centre that would re-integrate the Island into the city of Venice.
In addition to its own research activities, study-encounters and seminars, the Foundation hosts conferences and congresses of qualified scientific and cultural organisations from Italy and abroad, offering them an unparalleled urban and monumental context for their work; it has also hosted - in a spirit of service towards the city, the nation and the organisations to which Italy belongs - other major initiatives in the field of international relations (in particular the two summits of the G7 that were held on the Island in 1980 and 1987).
The Foundation is located in what was once the Benedictine Monastery, which was enlarged in the 16th century on a plan by A. Palladio who realised the refectory, the adjoining Church and the Cloister of the Cypresses.

Here you can admire an important group of canvases by J. Tintoretto and 16th and 17th century works belonging to the school of D. Tintoretto and B. De’ Pitati.
