Built towards the end of XII century it was called the gate of announcements, and then San Lazzaro like the nearby shelter for lepers. Reconstructed in 1555/56 by the community administrator Girolamo Zorzi, the beautiful gate lost its role of defence and became the main entrance to the city for men and merchandise coming from nearby Fondaco.
